EU Reps Break Ranks And Will Meet Hamas
You probably didn't know that a high level European delegation is currently visiting the Palestinians. The story is not getting too much press coverage. The reason should not surprise you. This from Maan;
A high-level European Parliament delegation headed by Mr Kyriacos Triantaphyllides (Cyprus) is visiting the occupied Palestinian territories from 29 April to 4 May 2007.
The delegation, which comprises European parliamentarians from seven different EU nations, is expected to meet with high-level representatives of the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC) and the Palestinian government, according to a press release from the European Commission office in Jerusalem.
What the press release fails to mention is just exactly who in the PLC they are going to meet; Fatah or Hamas. EU policy remains in place that nobody meets Hamas. In order to clear things up, I sent an email to three members (De Rossa, Bowis and Davies) of the delegation. Here is a copy;
Sir,
I understand that you will be in Palestine through May 4th. I would like to know which government officials are scheduled to meet with your group. Will you be meeting with Fatah officials only or will you also meet with Hamas officials?
Thank you in advance for you prompt reply.
I received a very prompt answer from Avril Manderson, who is the Press Officer to Chris Davies. Here is her response;
Dear Jay.
Please find below a press statement relating to Chris' visit. Further to this the delegation will be meeting with 5 ministers from the Unity Govt this afternoon, and are also due to meet President Mahmood Abbas this evening.
Best wishesAvril

MEPs TO DEFY EU BY MEETING PALESTINIAN PRIME MINISTER
A European Parliament delegation is set to break with EU policy by meeting with Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Hanieh TOMORROW (Tuesday 1 May).
The European Council and European Commission continues to refuse to meet with any Hamas member of the new Unity Government, claiming that they are yet to be satisfied about their compliance with the demands of the Quartet,viz. renunciation of violence, recognition of Israel, and acceptance of past agreements.
But an official and all-party delegation of the Parliament is due to meet with Mr Hanieh in Gaza on Tuesday morning.
The group includes Liberal Democrat MEP Chris Davies, who last year was the first British representative to meet with President Mahmood Abbas after theEU withdrew direct funding from the Palestinian Authority.
He said: "A year ago I described it as madness for the EU not to respect the result of democratic elections in Palestine, and refuse even to talk to members of the then Hamas-led government. The situation has deteriorated hugely since then but the formation of the Unity Government offers a ray of hope that must be seized."
Members of the Delegation want to question Mr Hanieh directly about the policies of the government he leads. We will also ask whether there is new information about kidnapped BBC journalist Alan Johnston, who I met in Gaza last year."
Now it's obvious why this story is not widely covered. Why would the MSM want to make noise about EU officials meeting Hamas terrorists? Can't we all be friends?
What really gets me is Davies' ludicrous statement, "A year ago I described it as madness for the EU not to respect the result of democratic elections in Palestine, and refuse even to talk to members of the then Hamas-led government."
This group would make great hostages in Gaza, don't you think?
