Condi Has Left The Building
Condi Rice is no longer with us in the war on terror. Condi is in Oslo and met with Norwegian Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere. Recall that Norway was the first European nation to recognize the Palestinian unity government. Norway went as far as to commit $100 million to the cause.
Here is Stoere;
"Norway has normalized relations with the government, which means that we talk to them. Norway will not be issuing carte blanche in any direction. We will be trying to pursue policies which draw in the right direction and which can also open the way for negotiations, and we also place very clear expectations on Israel."
Naturally, there are clear expectations from Israel; from the Palestinians, nothing.
Rice's response?
"We are in agreement that a Palestinian government that fully recognizes the Quartet principles would be a very good step forward, and I know the minister has worked very hard in the contacts that he has had to try to push forward towards that goal."
Not only does Rice not take Stoere to task for breaking the Western boycott of the terrorist government, she actually praises his hard work!! What has he done? He has awarded the Palestinians for their terror. $100 million without even one concession from Hamas! Not one!
Rice's corrupt diplomacy has done much harm. Her shameless promotion of Fatah chief Abbas as a "man of peace" and a "peace partner" is nothing short of a farce. She emboldens the terrorists with every visit to the region. Now she has taken another step down a very dangerous road. She is congratulating the terror financiers. In this respect, she is not very different than...Pelosi.

Wow, Jay, I'm disappointed. I'm going to have to research this a bit further before coming to a conclusion because I've always like Condi, but it appears very disappointing.
Amy,
Condi may be the most frustrated person in the whole story. She has invested much time and effort in trying to resolve the crisis. The problem is that she just doesn't understand the root of the problem.
She doesn't understand that Abbas and Fatah are no less committed than Hamas to the destruction of Israel. Abbas is the good guy to the Hamas bad guy.
Not a day goes by that Abbas does not make very "hostile" statements in Arabic. The MSM won't touch it, but many other agencies do.
If all Condi can claim as an accomplishment is a bi-weekly Olmert/Abbas meeting, she should pack it in. By coddling Abbas and by presenting him as a legitimate partner she is undermining the Bush Doctrine. She is causing a world of damage.
Completely unsurprising. She is yet another "realist" from the State Department. Realists, as history has conclusively established, tend to be completely disconntected from actual reality......

Actually, you don't go to Norway, which is hosting the NATO Minister's combine, and trash your host's efforts to mediate the Palestinian question. Condi's statement in that respect means little.
Look, Abbas is the only game in town. He too, was elected. Whether you like what he stands for or not is immaterial: he was elected!
Condi understands that we are in a pre-war period. That's what none of you understand. This is more about marking time before the Iranians do something stupid than anything else.
condi is not your friend. condi is the child of a presbyterian minister. a couple of years ago, the presbytes called for divestments from israel. they also called for the boycotting of such businesses as caterpillar who do a great business with israel. condi speaks with forked tongue, as my forefathers would say.
personally, i don't trust too many people over the age of fifty who've NEVER been married, nor had children as the result of that marriage regardless of her religious stance.
the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, so to speak.
don't believe me? - check out presbyterian church u.s.a. - she is but a pawn in the larger scheme of things.
Anonymous,
The fact that he was elected means nothing. Hitler and Chavez were elected as well. All that means is that the electorate shares in the guilt of the elected.
Condi can mark time elsewhere. In a pre war period, you don't help strengthen the enemy.
Nanc,
Very interesting. I will have to look into that.
I have written on this "shuttle diplomacy" and have asked Condi to send in the men and to stay out of it herself. In dealing with the Middle East in any capacity, we are weakened when we send in a woman. Have we learned nothing from Albright's big hats?
While it may be a big oohrah for "diversity" at home, sending a woman in as a diplomatic representative for the US in the Middle East further demonstrates that we don't seem to have a clue on the culture we are dealing with. Condi should send her Undersecretary - given that person is a man skilled in Middle Eastern politics, et al, and keep herself removed as the "big gun" CEO.
But at the same time, I don't think it is smart to send a Muslim as our representative to the UN if that is what we did. In some ways, that move can be seen as capitulation - especially following on the heels of John Bolton.
Allow me to add two more things: first, the post I referenced, Shuttle Diplomacy Again!, and what I perceive to be lack of basic MBA management skills which include keeping the CEO in this case Condi above the fray and futher keeping her boss removed as well so that she as Secretary of State can be called in by her underling and that she can then call in the President if agreements are reached. She should not be the negotiator - in my humble opinion.
Beach Girl,
I'm not sure I agree with you take that Condi is not the right "man" for the job because she's a woman. Here in the region she is viewed as incompetent simply because she has accomplished nothing. My take is that she is straying from the Bush Doctrine to set herself up for a run at the presidency herself. She wants to distance herself from Bush and make a lot of powerful friends along the way.
I knew Condi was headed toward the dark side, but as you've reported ... she's a goner now. Too bad, she had such potential.
p.s. I voted at RCP
Debbie,
Condi was toast the minute she jumped ship. She is no longer a member of team in the war on terror. She has become an appeaser.
