Is Our Democracy Inherently Suicidal?
I ran across Michelle Boorstein's article entitled "More Muslims Gaining Political Ground" in today's Washington Post and it really got me thinking. It's a good piece detailing the success that Moslems have had in winning some elections. What is more worrisome is the strength in turnout of the Moslem voter. For the nitty gritty, you can read the article here.
It's a little early to talk about a Moslem majority in the US; however the surge in their voting power is a cause for concern. My fundamental question; is today's democratic society inherently suicidal? Do all the "freedoms" so generously afforded by the Bill of Rights guarantee its own destruction?
Theoretically speaking, if more and more of them immigrate to the US, and continue to multiply at astounding rates, at what point will they represent 10 or 20 percent of the electorate? Will that be enough to gain some seats in the Senate? At that point, maybe immigration laws will be diluted, opening the door for more potential voters. I see a light at the end of the tunnel, but I'm afraid that it's a train.
The answer is quite simple. In a democratic society, the majority has the power to dictate, when what they dictate is right, or moral. For example, you will never see on any referendum the option to vote for the legalization of murder. Murder is wrong. The democracy cannot permit it. So too, the democracy will never legalize robbery or assault. I am referring to the "no brainers", which any sane individual recognizes is absolutely wrong.
Being such, the democracy can never allow control to pass to the hands of those whose sole intent it is to destroy it. It would be anti-democratic, even for a majority to decide so. It would be suicide. You can't stop the voters from voting for candidates on the ballot, but you can stop certain candidates from reaching the ballot. We have to.
