The Big Lie
Hezbollah is a lie. The United Nations is a lie. You can add to the list Kofi Annan. Yesterday, at an emergency session of the UN Security Council, called for the express purpose of vilifying and condemning Israel, Kofi Annan was quoted as saying, "I am, therefore, relying on the Lebanese authorities for my information. Preliminary reports say that at least 54 people have been killed, among them at least 37 children". He is of course talking about the Israeli air strike on Qana. International news sources have mentioned in their blaring headlines that up to 50 or even 60 have been killed. Annan is quoting "Lebanese sources" for the figures. Until yesterday, I could have given him the benefit of the doubt and said these were Lebanese Government sources. In his daily press conference yesterday, Lebanese PM Siniora paid his due respects to Hezbollah, saying he respects Nasrallah for his efforts and the Hezbollah fighters for their dedication to the Lebanese cause. This is the government that the US is trying so hard to keep in place. The Lebanese Government is clearly no longer a "third side" to this battle.
Not 10 minutes ago I spoke with Bana Sayeh, International Red Cross representative in Jerusalem. Our conversation was in reference to the ICRC's press release from yesterday (http://www.icrc.org/Web/Eng/siteeng0.nsf/html/Lebanon-news-300706!OpenDocument ). The release mentions that 28 bodies were pulled from the rubble in Qana. Her source for this figure is the Lebanese Red Cross, and as of now, the figure has not been revised.
I would like to know which "Lebanese sources" gave Annan his figures. Kofi said at least 54 were dead. Why did the news services not double check their figures? Why were Kofi's figures not double checked with the Red Cross, whose work he is so proud of? The answer is quite simple. If you called the emergency meeting with intent to condemn Israel, the numbers really aren't that important.
